The burning question

The one thing that really intrigues me is that in every generation there is a cultural movement that raises up against “the materialism and capitalism”, and its group of intellectuals and activists act as writers and artists. Yet “the materialism and capitalism” are the mundane everyday life of the ordinary people. Does art has to be an act of moving away from everyday life? Moreover, such culture movement will only gain recognition by being appreciated by the general public, and as a result, the artists becomes rich and famous thanks to the materialism and capitalism that they are so despised of.

These love-hate relationship between art and materialism/capitalism eludes me.

  1. I agree. To show you've really "made it" as an artist is to have your paintings sell for high above what the average person can afford. Usually the type of people that alternative type artists are making statements against. It is a bit ironic.
